Service Line: Personality disorder, mental health & rehabilitation

Summary of the site

We are currently looking for an occupational therapist to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Derby.

This post holder would work within a well-established Occupational Therapy team and multi-disciplinary team based on one of three wards at site.

Cygnet Hospital Derby provides low secure and mental health rehabilitation care based on the Recovery Model. Our integrated male care pathway includes Litchurch Ward, our low secure ward, and the Wyvern Unit, our mental health rehabilitation service. Alvaston Ward, our specialist female personality disorder service, is one of the leading services of its kind in the East and West Midlands.

Our dedicated clinical teams provide a full multi-disciplinary programme that includes; occupational therapy, psychology, psychiatry and social work offering service users the opportunities and support they need to return to community living either with support or independently.

Our occupational therapy department supports service users to engage in meaningful occupations, overcome barriers that prevent them from engaging in meaningful activities and focuses on supporting individuals to develop the skills needed to live a more independent and fulfilling life in the community.

To support with this, we have a full therapy programme that includes a range of self-care, productive and leisure-based activities. Our occupational therapy pathway has different stages of treatment and the interventions offered will change as our service user’s progress through each stage of this pathway.

You would be responsible for the assessment and treatment of occupational dysfunction for service users working alongside an Occupational Therapy Assistant or activity coordinator. You will work with a full multidisciplinary team in a coordinated way to support each service user develop their skills and move through our clinical model of care from admission to discharge.

Occupational Therapy Directorate

At Cygnet Group, we have a strong occupational focus through support and direction from Clinical and Regional Leads and our Occupational Therapy Directors.  We use evidence-based practice within each of our service lines, as defined by our clinical steering groups, of which Occupational Therapists play a key role. 

Under the leadership of our occupational therapy directors we support over 150 Occupational Therapists. Working together as a large team we provide support to each other across the group, with the opportunity to be part of specialist interest groups & become involved in service development.

Every service line has a clinical lead occupational therapist to lead and develop evidence based practice and agreed occupational therapy pathway.

We ensure our occupational therapists have a voice through participating in service model development, utilising the expertise and support of our clinical lead occupational therapists.

Occupational Therapy Preceptorship & Induction:

We understand the pandemic has brought with it challenging times, and we recognise this may have had an impact on some of your placement experiences. We offer an Occupational Therapy 12 month preceptorship programme to support and consolidate core Occupational Therapy Skills.

You are... 

  • Qualified in Occupational Therapy – degree, diploma or equivalent 
  • HPCP registered and a member of a professional body 
  • An excellent communicator with first-rate interpersonal skills & a positive approach
  • Experienced in OT processes/interventions & can take a hands-on approach
  • Preferably experienced in the field of mental health
  • Empathetic, sensitive & able to remain calm in challenging situations
  • Highly organised & clear, professional & concise report writer
