Practitioner Psychologist working in our Female Neuropsychiatric Unit in Middlesbrough
Salary: £45,996-54,000 dependent on experience. This will be pro-rata depending on the number of hours.
Hours: the hours are negotiable. They are up to full time, and may depend on the grade you are appointed at.

This post could either be appointed at the equivalent of a band 7 preceptorship working towards an 8a equivalent, or at an equivalent 8a depending upon skills and experience. Responsibilities will be adjusted accordingly. We welcome applications from newly qualified psychologists.

If you have an interest in working towards being on the British Psychological Society Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists, this will be supported by Cygnet and there is currently funding available for the knowledge and practice components of the Clinical Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology.

Cygnet Newham House:

Cygnet Newham House is our Neuropsychiatric care and treatment facility for women, a first for Cygnet, comprising 20 beds. There is a full multidisciplinary team at Newham House including neuropsychiatry, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, activity co-ordinators nursing staff and support workers. The team at Cygnet Newham House are very welcoming and the psychology service is well respected and positively supported.

Your Day-to-Day…

At Cygnet Newham House, you will be delivering psychological assessment and intervention as part of the on-site psychology team at Newham House. The psychology service is funded for a part-time consultant psychologist, a practitioner psychologist and an assistant psychologist. Trainee Psychologists have previously been on successful placements at Newham House. Some of the support worker staff have previously worked in the role of behaviour champion and attended monthly meetings to support patients with behaviour that challenges. The unit uses a positive behaviour support model, with ABC charts and incident management systems in place to support the functional assessment of behaviour. There will be opportunities to carry out cognitive assessment, neuro-rehabilitation, capacity assessment, risk assessment and psychological therapy.

Cygnet has 7 neuropsychiatry services across the country, each of which has at least one qualified psychologist/neuropsychologist on site. Psychologists at these sites form the national neuropsychology team. The national team has monthly governance meetings to discuss best practice guidelines, support standardised practice and share clinical cases. There is a consultant neuropsychologist already in post within the national neuropsychology team. The national neuropsychology team have a variety of training in skills in areas such as forensic psychology, trauma therapy and EMDR, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Some members of the team are being supported to complete Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology and are currently undertaking the knowledge component.

Your role will be to:

  • Provide psychology services at Cygnet Newham House.
  • Provide supervision to the assistant psychologist on site
  • Positively contribute to the multidisciplinary team at Cygnet Newham House
  • Carry out psychological assessments & provide therapy to individuals & groups.
  • Support Cygnet Newham House to implement the positive behaviour support approach to managing residents.
  • Collaboratively develop care plans, risk assessments and risk management measures with the MDT at Newham House.
  • Contribute to reflective practice groups with staff at Cygnet Newham House
  • Provide training & supervision to colleagues, and consultation to teams. 
  • Evaluate the local and national neuropsychology/neuropsychiatry service, contribute to its development & carry out clinical research.
  • Contribute to the Cygnet national neuropsychology department through attending and chairing meetings, presenting case studies, supporting the development of standardised practice, leading/contributing to service development projects, service related research and promoting positive governance practices.
  • Disseminate outcomes via conference presentations and publications.

We are looking for someone who is...

  • A HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist with Clinical, Counselling or Forensic Psychologist with experience in a clinical, forensic, mental health or neurorehabilitation setting
  • Someone with an interest in working with people with neurological conditions and challenging behaviour
  • Trainee Psychologists due to qualify within 6 month’s
  • Passionate about working with people presenting with complex range of Neuropsychological difficulties
  • Capable of treating difficulties such as self-harm, physical & verbal aggression, history of sexual offending and drug & alcohol problem where appropriate and associated with Neuropsychological issues.
