We are looking to recruit a number of motivated individuals with an interest in Mental Health to join our Independent Hospital Manager team at Cygnet Hospital Stevenage. Independent Hospital Managers sit as part of a three-member panel appointed specially to look at whether people should be discharged from detention under the Mental Health Act. In this important role, you will participate as a panel member, ensuring that Service Users’ rights are explored and upheld. This will require the consideration of reports from the clinicians involved in the Service Users care and the views of the patient if given, before determining whether the criteria for detention are met.

Cygnet Health Care employees cannot serve as Independent Hospital Managers.

Please note: this is a voluntary role, on a sessional basis.

Main duties of the role

• To sit on a panel with two other managers and conduct a hearing
• To hear appeals from Service Users detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
• To hear reviews of Service Users detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, whose detention is due for renewal
• To balance all information presented (written and oral) to decide whether the criteria for detention is still met or whether the Service User should be discharged from detention
• To attend committee meetings and training sessions as required
• To maintain absolute confidentiality with regard to information heard during the course of the role

Cygnet Hospital Stevenage provides a comprehensive psychological assessment and therapy programme across its three secure wards. Our psychologists are trained in a variety of psychological assessments and therapeutic models, allowing them to offer a personalised package of assessment and therapies to service users.

We offer specialist diagnostic assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ADOS) and Personality Disorders (IPDE and PCL-R). The therapies offered include; Substance Misuse Programme, Fire Setting Intervention Programme for Mentally Disordered Offenders (FIP-MO) and Sex Offender Treatment Programme for Mentally disordered Offenders (SOTP-MO). The psychology team offers a range of individual therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural and Cognitive Analytical Therapy, Schema focused and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Care is provided within a medium secure perimeter. Inside the hospital, everyone has an individual en-suite bedroom and there is outdoor space available for all. There are also a range of additional facilities including a vocational cafe, large indoor gym hall, multi-gym, outdoors football pitch and garden area.

The aim at Stevenage is to help people learn how to manage their mental health and reinforce their daily living skills, helping to prepare for independent life.

We are looking for people who:

• Have an interest in Mental Health
• Are able to communicate effectively
• Demonstrate empathy and understanding
• Are able to make fair and reasonable judgement based on written and oral evidence
• May have previous experience of working as an Independent Hospital Manager
• Have experience of using Microsoft/IT software/Microsoft Teams
